Outdoor Education evoked much though and creativity from the sixth grade students! Check it out!

Bedtime
By N.J.

The whispers and the giggles
The eyes wide with fight
The shores and the screams
And the laughter that night
But not me…
I was safe in my bed ‘til they
Said, “time to sleep!”
The smell of stinky socks filled me that
Night and helped me drift off quickly
To dreamland.

I frolicked in the meadow
and was filled with the anticipation
for tomorrow morning.
The warmth of a nice short showers
And the taste of mint tooth paste
Left a triangle in my mouth. Even the
Horrible morning breath was a doubt.
The soft fell of the pillow encases
Your head with dreams,
the thought of Crazy Willie made me
Snuggle down deep. And finally, at last,
I lay asleep.

The noise has died down and off I go
To the Dreamland where it’s all
Encased with heads on pillows.

Beach
By L.G.

The warm soft sand in
Between my toes

The mist of the ocean
Splash on my legs

The wind blows my hair
Around my face

The ocean’s never ending
Blueness

Seashells scratch my ankles
As I walk through the sand

The Circus
By C.T.

Tasting the cotton candy
melting in your mouth,
Feeling the sweat on the palms of your hand,
as the performers do there tricks.
Listening to all the children scream
as the lion tamer tames the lion.
You smell the buttery popcorn getting sold
to a crowd of hungry people.
Finally the grand finale comes
you’re shaking in your chair.
Frightfully watching as they
launched a person out of a canon.

A gush of wind pushes my hair gently as I walk forward.
The fresh air clams me down as I hear the rustle of the trees.
Darkness surrounds me.
At a distance I can see figures,
I looked up,
I can see the moon sitting up there.
It seemed to be the only light I had.
As I kept walking, I felt the cold goo of mud,
It kept made my shoes squeak.
I can hear the sound of a light, a spark.
I began to approach the light.
Suddenly I felt a rush of heat blow in my face.
A bonfire!
I made it.

Orienteering
N.W.

As I walked along trying to find the orienteering poles,
I heard the sticks snapping beneath my feet,
And people yelling because of the pain of the thorns.
I feel the mud overflow my shoes and go in to my socks,
And I feel the thorns go through my jacket
to my skin underneath.
I can barely feel my hands,
For they are still numb and unmovable
from the fall I took on the ice covered ground.
My nose is freezing too
I can still smell the scent of the damp moss
Left on the trees by the melted ice.
I look forward to the campfire ,
Which I can already smell but cannot see.
I try not to laugh as I see people slip on the ice
and struggle to get up and get stable.
I see the KP’s go to the dining hall to get ready for dinner.
I gear my stomach growl and I can’t wait to eat,
For it has been a long day and still and still more to come.

As I hear the wind wooshing through the woods, the trees rattles and children scream in fear. I hear the marshmallows sizzling in the fire and crackers being munched. I can feel the intense heat of the fire wrapping around my body. It stings my eyes; sparks flying everywhere. My feet are slowly sinking into the gooey mud as if it were quick sand. As I smell the melted chocolate, my mouth waters. I take my first bite into my s’more I am filled with pleasure. The soften marshmallow tastes as if it is a cloud. The smell of burning wood is now too much to handle. I look up to the sky and see it is flooded with stars. I see the intensity in everyone’s faces as they prepare to keep listening to each scary story. When it is finally over, I start heading back to my cabin. Everyone is jumpy. Someone shrieks and everyone is frightened as the start charging towards the cabin in fear. At least five people are trampled into the cold, wet, slimy, mud including me. I long for my boots as I trudge through the pitch black field. I gaze back at the fire which is still raging in the forest. Finally, a chaperone turns on a flashlight to illuminate the darkness. As I a falling asleep, I realize it is nowhere near bedtime. I hang my head in exhaustion and waiting for it to be over. When the activities are finally done, I lay my head onto my cold, plastic, mattress and slowly go into a deep sleep hoping I don’t have nightmares.

As I got to the site, I felt a burst of joy inside me.
I could tell from the rumors and teachers that this will be fun as fun can be.
I heard the laughter of people as we went on through the day.
And I felt the rush inside me when we played games like predator/prey
The day turned into night and I heard screaming from us kids
and I smelled burning wood.
The smoke burnt my eyelids.

I listen to the shrieks of my friends from the horrifying ghost stories,
I try to ignore the feeling of the mud slosh, and sink in my boots,
I taste the salty damp air surrounding me, I inhale the delicious smell of food from inside the mess hall, wishing I was there,
Io stare at the many cold, hungry kids huddling a warm, nice place.
And soon I’m there. I’m here the crowded chatter of kids surround me,
And taste them gooey drippy s’more, and once again I’m happy.

I could hear people talking about outdoor ed
wishing they could of gone.
Everyone felt a bored feeling
floating everywhere with the cold air of the school
going into the empty classrooms.
I walk into in a cave with no one in a sight
Seeing people’s loneliness with none of their friends here.
